Actor Joe Manganiello is opening up about a harrowing seven-year health crisis in his forthcoming memoir, Bloodlines, set to release on October 13 through Avid Reader Press, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. The book details Manganiello's battle with what he describes as "a cascade of autoimmune-related illnesses" that attacked his skin, thyroid, eyes, lungs, and digestive system, resulting in chronic pain, multiple near-death experiences, and a life-saving organ amputation. The ordeal left him in an existential crisis as traditional medicine proved unable to provide answers or clear explanations for his condition.
Facing the limitations of conventional treatment, Manganiello embarked on an unconventional healing journey that took him across the globe. He explored spirituality through shamans, pagan rituals, and ancient myths while simultaneously conducting extensive research into his own ancestry and family history. Through this dual investigation, he uncovered ancestors who survived the Armenian genocide and others living with chronic illness, connecting his personal suffering to inherited trauma spanning generations.
In a statement to People magazine, Manganiello characterized the experience as transformative, saying it was "the most brutally difficult time of my life, one I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy, but also my greatest adventure." He expressed hope that sharing his journey would provide readers with perspective on their own struggles. "The process of writing this book gave me the gift of perspective that helped me to see that my suffering was a cocoon from which I would emerge forever changed," he reflected.
Publisher Simon & Schuster describes Bloodlines as "deeply personal and emotionally expansive," positioning it as more than a medical crisis narrative. The memoir explores themes of illness, inheritance, masculinity, faith, ambition, and identity—examining what occurs when the constructed life can no longer contain the truth of what one carries. The book is now available for preorder and represents Manganiello's candid account of survival, faith, and self-discovery.

For those facing their own health crises or family histories of suffering, his account—blending medical ordeal with spiritual and ancestral investigation—provides both validation and a framework for finding meaning in adversity. The book challenges conventional recovery narratives by positioning illness as a catalyst for profound self-discovery, making it relevant to anyone grappling with identity, faith, or the limits of traditional medicine.
