Mertens Defeats Swiatek to Reach China Open Semifinals

Elise Mertens advanced to the China Open semifinals on October 9 with a commanding 7–6(0), 6–3 victory over Iga Swiatek in Beijing. The Belgian player dominated the opening-set tiebreak, winning it 6–0, and broke Swiatek's serve once in the second set to secure the win in 1 hour 50 minutes. This marks Mertens' first WTA 1000 semifinal since the 2021 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

Swiatek, the eighth seed and six-time Grand Slam champion, entered the quarterfinal as one of the tournament favourites after several higher-ranked players fell. The loss is a significant blow to her aspirations for the WTA Finals, where she has competed in each of the prior five editions but is not currently in the provisional qualifying positions. Mertens has now defeated three Grand Slam champions in Beijing—Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Jelena Ostapenko—in her best run at the tournament.

Mertens will face Olympic gold medallist Zheng Qinwen in the semifinals. Zheng advanced by defeating sixth seed Elina Svitolina 6–3, 7–6(8). Mertens commented on her progress: "A veces simplemente vas creciendo dentro de un torneo" (Sometimes you simply grow into a tournament), acknowledging the momentum she has built through the event.
