A passenger ferry caught fire in the Java Sea off East Java province on Sunday, August 2, 2026, resulting in at least 5 confirmed deaths and 41 people missing. The Mutiara Sentosa 2, operated by PT Atosim Lampung Pelayaran, was carrying 271 people—232 passengers and 39 crew members—when the fire broke out between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. local time. The vessel was traveling from Surabaya to Makassar when the blaze erupted approximately 19 nautical miles north of Sapudi Island in waters off Sumenep regency near Madura Island.
The ferry operator reported the incident to the Surabaya search and rescue office approximately one hour after the fire began, after receiving information from the captain that the vessel was ablaze near the northern tip of Madura Island. Contact with the ferry was subsequently lost. By 9:45 a.m., authorities determined the ferry's precise location after communicating with the nearby cargo vessel Meratus Project 3, which was unable to approach the burning ferry because it was carrying a flammable cargo load.
Rescue operations began shortly before 10 a.m. when a tugboat and another passing vessel moved in to evacuate passengers. By Sunday afternoon, several nearby vessels had rescued 225 passengers and crew members and recovered five bodies. Footage released by Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) showed thick black smoke billowing from one side of the ferry and spreading across much of the ship. Videos circulating on social media depicted terrified passengers, mostly wearing life jackets, clustered on the deck and upper sections of the vessel, with some jumping into the sea as orange flames and black smoke engulfed the burning ship.
Search and rescue teams dispatched a rescue vessel from Surabaya, estimated to take approximately six hours to reach the scene. A rigid inflatable boat from the Sumenep rescue post was sent toward the location but returned to shore due to rough seas and high waves. The Indonesian Navy deployed a warship to assist in the ongoing operation. The 160-meter-long and 25-meter-wide ferry serves the Surabaya-Makassar route, a voyage typically lasting around 40 hours and primarily used by domestic travelers and for cargo transport between Java and Sulawesi.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation as of Sunday afternoon. Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, frequently experiences maritime accidents, with lax enforcement of safety regulations often cited as a contributing factor.
Why This Matters
At least 46 people are confirmed dead or missing from a maritime incident involving a major domestic passenger ferry operating between Java and Sulawesi. The incident disrupts the 40-hour Surabaya–Makassar route, a primary domestic transport corridor for passengers and cargo between two major Indonesian islands. Search and rescue operations remain ongoing; recovery outcomes depend on continued sea conditions and operational capacity. Maritime safety compliance and incident investigation procedures will be focal points for Indonesia's maritime authority and international observers of maritime transportation standards in Southeast Asia.
