A police officer was shot in the foot in Nottingham city centre early on Sunday morning after approaching two suspects at a bus stop in Angel Row, shortly before 04:50 BST. The male officer was struck by a projectile believed to have been fired from a shotgun. He remains in hospital in stable condition and has undergone surgery. The two suspects fled the scene, triggering a nationwide police search.
Four people have been arrested in connection with the incident. A 27-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. A 24-year-old man and 25-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender after police stopped a vehicle in the Radford area of Nottingham on Sunday evening. A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender after police stopped a vehicle in Bedfordshire in the early hours of Monday. All four were being questioned by detectives.
A firearm, described in photographs as appearing to be a sawn-off shotgun, was recovered from the scene. Assistant Chief Constable Claire Rukas stated that detectives were making "good progress" in the investigation and that there was no information to suggest a wider threat to the public. She thanked members of the public who came to the officer's aid immediately after the shooting.
Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Gary Godden characterised the officer's injuries as "not life-threatening – it's most likely to be life-altering." Labour MP for Nottingham East Nadia Whittome noted the officer was now out of surgery and acknowledged the incident as "extremely rare" while praising the community response. A large police cordon that was put in place following the shooting has since been lifted, though an increased police presence remained in the area.
Why This Matters
A serving police officer sustained a gunshot wound during an active incident in a UK city centre, affecting operational policing and public safety protocols in the area. The arrest of four individuals and recovery of a firearm marks progress in the investigation; authorities have ruled out a broader public threat. The incident's rarity in the UK context and the officer's potential long-term disability raise questions about operational safety and investigative outcome, with implications for local community confidence and law enforcement procedures.
