Indonesian Chess Player Chelsie Monica Defeats Magnus Carlsen in Simultaneous Exhibition

Chelsie Monica Ignesias Sihite, an Indonesian chess player, achieved a remarkable victory over world number one and Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen during a simultaneous exhibition held as part of the FIDE World Rapid Team Championship 2026 in Hong Kong. The event took place on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a day before the official opening of the championship.

Chelsie, who was in Hong Kong to represent Indonesia in the World Rapid and Blitz team competition, was not initially scheduled to face Carlsen. However, through her connection with Seth from the Annie Chess organization, whom she had previously worked with in Bali, she was offered the opportunity to participate in the exhibition match against the reigning world champion. She accepted with enthusiasm, describing the chance to play against her idol as a dream come true.

During the match, Carlsen played simultaneously against 24 players from various countries in a rapid format. Chelsie, the only player to defeat the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) of chess in this session, employed the Italian Opening, a strategy she frequently uses. She carefully developed her pieces and maintained a solid defense, watching for any threats from Carlsen. Mid-game, she noticed Carlsen had overlooked one of her moves, allowing her to launch a counterattack that culminated in a checkmate.

Reflecting on the experience, Chelsie admitted to feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. "Playing with Magnus makes me happy, and yes, there is nervousness because he is the greatest chess player of all time and one of my idols," she said in an interview published on the ChessBase India YouTube channel. She added that she was also anxious about losing quickly in front of the many children watching, but she focused on survival and ultimately secured the win through what she called a combination of luck and careful play.

The victory highlights Chelsie's emerging talent on the international stage and adds a memorable chapter to the FIDE World Rapid Team Championship 2026, which brings together top chess players from around the world.
