Rex Heuermann, the Long Island serial killer who admitted to murdering eight women between 1993 and 2010, was sentenced on Wednesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Judge Timothy Mazzei imposed the maximum penalty under New York law: three consecutive life sentences with no parole, followed by four consecutive sentences of 25 years to life.
Heuermann, 62, appeared in a Riverhead courtroom for the sentencing. Before the judge handed down the sentence, Heuermann addressed the court, saying, "I'm responsible. The words I would say have no meaning." Judge Mazzei then questioned him, asking, "Are you at least a little bit sorry for what you did to these eight women?" Heuermann nodded and said he was. The judge responded, "You're a disgusting and despicable small man, if you're a man at all, and you're a coward." After sentencing, Mazzei ordered bailiffs to "get him out of here."
Heuermann pleaded guilty to seven of the murders on April 8 and confessed to an uncharged eighth. The victims were found strangled and often dismembered, concealed across Long Island from the Hamptons to Gilgo Beach. They include Sandra Costilla, 28; Karen Vergata, 34; Valerie Mack, 24; Jessica Taylor, 20; and the so-called Gilgo Four: Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25; Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Megan Waterman, 22; and Amber Lynn Costello, 27.
During the hearing, relatives of several victims delivered emotional impact statements. Valerie Mack's adoptive father told Heuermann that despite the atrocities, "you never touched her soul," adding, "Valerie is the one who is free today, and you are not." A cousin of Jessica Taylor told Heuermann, "You thought you took her voice," noting that investigators ultimately caught him despite his planning. Melissa Cann, sister of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, recalled her sister's final words — "I love you. I'll see you tomorrow" — and said she made it her life's mission to see Heuermann identified and brought to justice. Brainard-Barnes' daughter, Nicolette, said she was only 7 when her mother was killed and called Heuermann "a coward who takes out his own shortcomings on others."
The case began to unfold in late 2010 after the disappearance of Shannan Gilbert, a 23-year-old woman who placed panicked 911 calls from the Oak Beach community before vanishing. During a search for her, police discovered the remains of 10 other victims in the area. Gilbert's death was deemed accidental, but the evidence surrounding the other victims eventually led police to Heuermann in 2022, more than a decade after the initial discoveries.

Why This Matters
This sentencing concludes one of the most notorious serial killer cases in New York history, demonstrating that law enforcement can identify and punish even the most elusive predators. It offers closure to the families of eight women and reinforces the importance of forensic evidence, victim advocacy, and cross-agency collaboration in solving cold cases. The maximum sentence sends a clear deterrent message to violent offenders.
