U2 Returns to Dublin School for 50th Anniversary Concert

Irish rock band U2 returned to Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin on Friday, 25 September, to mark their 50th anniversary with a surprise concert at the location where they formed half a century ago. The performance took place in the schoolyard before approximately 1,000 pupils and staff, as well as international media and onlookers who learned of the event. The 30-minute set featured career-spanning hits including "I Will Follow" (1980), "Vertigo" (2004), "Beautiful Day" (2000), and "With or Without You," along with the new single "Silencio" from their upcoming album "Carnaval De Luz."

The concert marked the exact anniversary of the band's first rehearsal, which took place on 25 September, 1976, in drummer Larry Mullen Jr's parents' kitchen after he posted a handwritten note on the school noticeboard reading: "Drummer seeks musicians to form band." Among those who auditioned were Bono (Paul Hewson), The Edge (David Evans), and bassist Adam Clayton. The band was initially called Feedback before adopting the name U2. Bono became emotional while performing on the same stage where U2 made their debut in the 1970s, at one point struggling to find words before thanking the audience.

Throughout the performance, Bono made humorous references to the band's school days and the teaching staff. He quipped about the science classrooms, saying "We escaped the lab — how's the experiment going for you?" and joked about his Spanish pronunciation while counting down the opening of "Vertigo." Teachers participated in the celebration, dancing along despite initially pulling students down from their classmates' shoulders to maintain order. Approximately 32 students from Music Generation, a program co-funded by U2, joined the band on stringed instruments for the song "One."

The schoolyard concert was part of a promotional campaign for "Carnaval De Luz," which features a duet between Bono and Dolly Parton. Following the school performance, U2 conducted an additional appearance from a balcony on Grafton Street in central Dublin for gathered crowds. In interviews, Mullen revealed that his father had suggested he post the original band-seeking note out of frustration with his drumming abilities. Bono recounted his initial hesitation about attending the audition at age 16, worried about appearing out of place, but said his friend Reggie Manuel persuaded him to go.
