Koivun is the second-youngest American player in Presidents Cup history, behind only Jordan Spieth, who was 20 in 2013. He earned his spot on the U.S. team as a captain's pick from Brandt Snedeker, despite debate over the selection. His rapid ascent to this stage is striking: 112 days separated his NCAA championship win with Auburn from his Presidents Cup debut. As a professional, Koivun won the 3M Open in his third PGA Tour start and qualified for the FedEx Cup Playoffs in five starts—matching Tiger Woods' record for fewest starts needed to reach the playoffs.

Thursday's match showed the promise Snedeker saw, though not without initial rough patches. Koivun struggled early, hooking a drive out of bounds on the second hole and making several early bogeys. He acknowledged the nerves: "A little shaky," he admitted afterward. However, he recovered to make three birdies and help Thomas, who posted a perfect 7-0 four-ball record, secure the decisive victory. However, the captain said he spent considerable time consulting with people who knew Koivun's character and game. "Every conversation I had, I came away more impressed," Snedeker said.
