Congo's Living Lumumba Statue Finally Makes World Cup Debut

Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, the Congolese fan known as Lumumba Vea for his striking resemblance to the country's assassinated independence leader Patrice Lumumba, made his long-awaited World Cup debut on Tuesday at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, Mexico. Dressed in a bright red jacket and tie, yellow shirt, and blue pants, Nkuka Mboladinga stood motionless on a pedestal behind the Congo bench with his right arm raised throughout the match against Colombia, recreating the iconic pose that made him a social media sensation during the Africa Cup of Nations.

The 52-year absence from the World Cup tournament made Nkuka Mboladinga's appearance particularly significant for Congo supporters. However, his path to the event proved challenging. He missed Congo's opening World Cup match against Portugal—which ended in a 1-1 draw in Houston—due to Ebola quarantine requirements. Earlier, he had also missed Congo's World Cup playoff match against Jamaica, which secured the nation's return to the tournament after 52 years, because he was unable to obtain a visa in time despite traveling to Kenya and Ethiopia in an attempt to secure documentation.

When asked if he was happy to have finally made it to the World Cup, Nkuka Mboladinga nodded and smiled but declined to be interviewed. His silent presence, which has become his trademark form of support, transforms each match into a performance art piece honoring Lumumba's legacy. Congo lost their Tuesday match against Colombia 1-0.

Patrice Lumumba, who helped end Belgian colonial rule over Congo in 1960, became the newly independent nation's first prime minister and was widely regarded as one of Africa's most promising leaders. His assassination within a year, during a conflict with a Belgian-backed secessionist movement in the mineral-rich Katanga region, remains a significant chapter in African history. In a related development, a Belgian court ordered in March that a 93-year-old former diplomat, Etienne Davignon, stand trial for the slaying, charging him with "participation in war crimes" for his alleged role in Lumumba's unlawful detention and transfer. Davignon is the last living among ten Belgians suspected of involvement in the killing.
