Zverev Becomes ATP World No. 1 After Vienna Victory
Alexander Zverev became the ATP world number one on 2 November 2026 following his victory at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, replacing Jannik Sinner. At 29, Zverev is the oldest first-time number one since 1974 and the second German to achieve the ranking after Boris Becker, capping a season in which he won the French Open and US Open.

Alexander Zverev secured the ATP world number one ranking with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Tallon Griekspoor at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna on 29 October 2026. The 29-year-old German will officially replace Jannik Sinner atop the rankings when they are published on 2 November, becoming the first player other than Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz to hold the top ranking since Novak Djokovic in June 2024.
Zverev's ascent to world number one caps a career-defining season in which he won the French Open and US Open titles, recorded a 64–80 match record, and also reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon and quarter-finals at the Australian Open. He is the second German man to achieve the ranking after Boris Becker in 1991, and at 29, is the oldest player to reach number one for the first time since John Newcombe in 1974.
The path to the top was shaped by injuries to his rivals. Sinner, who had led the rankings at the start of 2026 with 11,500 points, ended his season three weeks prior due to inflammation in his right knee. Alcaraz, who began 2026 with 12,050 points, lost in Shanghai on 12 October, securing Zverev's year-end number one finish. At the season's start, third-ranked Zverev had held only 5,110 points—numerically closer to the 2,221st player in the world than to either rival.
Zverev acknowledged the role of injury absences, stating he would "maybe not" be the world's best player if both rivals were "healthy and at the top of their game." He noted that both his Grand Slam victories came without facing Sinner or Alcaraz, and he did not face a top-10 opponent until his US Open final against Ben Shelton. However, sources describe his season as his greatest, marked by efficient victories against available competition.
Zverev expressed the significance of the achievement, saying "It's been a wait but sometimes you have to wait for the best things in life" and "It is different than winning a tournament or a title, but it's such a special feeling to know that the No. 1 is going to be next to your name when the new rankings come out." He will be the 30th different men's player to reach the number one ranking.

Why This Matters
Zverev's ascension to world number one marks a significant shift in the men's tennis hierarchy after five years of Djokovic, Alcaraz, and Sinner dominance (June 2024–November 2026). His ranking affects ATP Finals seeding, Grand Slam draw positioning, and sponsorship/media valuations for the world's top-ranked player. The achievement comes after rival injuries (Sinner's knee inflammation, Alcaraz's Shanghai loss) and Zverev's two Grand Slam titles in 2026, reshaping expectations for 2027 tournament scheduling and ranking race dynamics.
