Bayer Leverkusen Signs Portuguese Winger Afonso Moreira from Lyon

Bayer Leverkusen completed the signing of Portuguese youth international Afonso Moreira from French club Lyon on Thursday, acquiring the 21-year-old winger for around 30 million euros ($34 million). The German Bundesliga club agreed to pay up to 33.6 million euros ($38.5 million) in total, including potential bonuses of 4.1 million euros ($4.7 million), according to Lyon's official announcement.

Moreira has signed a long-term contract with Leverkusen through June 2031. The Portuguese winger joined Lyon from Sporting CP just last year for 2 million euros, making this transfer a significant step up in his career trajectory. During his single season at Lyon, Moreira made an immediate impact, scoring eight goals and providing 11 assists across 37 appearances in French league, cup, and Europa League competition.

Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes praised the acquisition, highlighting Moreira's technical qualities and tactical fit. "Moreira is a fast, agile and skillful attacker with the ability to finish and he has an excellent eye for his teammates," Rolfes said in a statement. "His pace and intense style of play are a perfect fit for our team."
