Colombia manager Nestor Lorenzo has called on his team to adopt an attacking mindset when they face DR Congo in their second Group K match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Guadalajara on Tuesday. Both sides enter the fixture on the back of positive opening results, with Colombia defeating Uzbekistan 3–1 and DR Congo earning a historic 1–1 draw against Portugal.
Lorenzo emphasized the importance of scoring goals and maintaining an aggressive style of play. "We need to score more goals," he told reporters. He also acknowledged the strength of the Congolese team, noting that they have players competing at the highest level in Europe and that they keep two important forwards up front. "We must avoid transitions and counterattacks," he added.
The match will be the first ever meeting between Colombia and DR Congo in men's international football. Colombia has a strong recent history in World Cup group stages, having won six of their last seven group matches, scoring 17 goals and conceding just five. They have also scored in each of their last 10 World Cup matches, the joint-longest active scoring streak alongside Argentina.
DR Congo, appearing in their first World Cup since 1974 when they competed as Zaire, earned their first ever point and goal in the tournament with Yoane Wissa's first-half header against Portugal. Despite having only 24.6% possession in that match, the lowest of any team on Matchday 1, they limited Portugal to seven shots and showed ambition with six of their eight attempts from outside the box.
A victory on Wednesday would secure Colombia's place in the knockout stage for a third consecutive World Cup appearance, having progressed from the group phase in both 2014 and 2018. Colombia's Luis Díaz, who scored and assisted in the opening win over Uzbekistan, will be a key threat, while DR Congo will look to Wissa, who could become only the second African player to score in each of his first two World Cup appearances after Mohamed Salah.
Lorenzo praised the versatility of his 26-man squad, saying he is confident in adapting his lineup and formation to any opponent. He has not yet decided on his starting XI for the match at Guadalajara Stadium. The match kicks off at 22:00 local time and will be broadcast on Fox Sports and Telemundo.
Why This Matters
This match is pivotal for Group K, as a win for Colombia would secure their knockout stage spot for the third consecutive World Cup, highlighting their consistency. For DR Congo, earning their first ever World Cup point signals a resurgence for African football, and another positive result could shake up group standings and advance their historic campaign.
