Trump Questions Western Decision to Exclude Russia from G8

US President Donald Trump has renewed his criticism of the decision to exclude Russia from the Group of Eight, calling the shift from G8 to G7 format questionable during a summit in France. Speaking to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Group of Seven summit, Trump expressed uncertainty about whether the reduction to seven members was beneficial, stating "it used to be the G8, now it's G7 and that was a good deal or not, but it's a G7." Trump has previously been more forceful in his criticism, calling the decision "stupid" in April and arguing that maintaining Russia's membership within the G8 framework could have prevented current global crises, including the conflict in Ukraine.

The G7 comprises seven of the world's most economically developed nations: the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, and Canada. The organization originally formed as the G6 in 1975 with six members before Canada joined in 1976. After Russia's inclusion, the group expanded to the G8 format. However, following Russia's actions related to the Ukraine crisis in March 2014, Western members voted to return to the G7 format during the Obama administration, effectively isolating Russia from the grouping.

Trump's repeated criticism of the G7 format reflects a broader perspective that Western engagement with Russia, rather than exclusion, might have been more effective in addressing international disputes. His remarks suggest a willingness to reconsider traditional Western diplomatic approaches regarding Russia's international standing and participation in major economic forums.
