The United States has eased travel restrictions on Iran's national soccer team, permitting the squad to enter the country two days before their World Cup match against Egypt on June 26 in Seattle. The decision, announced by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on Tuesday, June 23, represents a significant change from earlier restrictions that required the team to travel only one day before matches. The team will still be required to depart the United States shortly after the match concludes.
The adjustment follows complaints from Iran's players and coaching staff about the travel limitations they faced during the tournament. For their first two matches in Los Angeles, the team was restricted to traveling only one day before each game. Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei stated after the team's 0–0 draw against Belgium that the conditions had been "extremely harsh" and that the squad needed recovery time. Player Alireza Jahanbakhsh said the team simply requested "the same procedure as for all the other 47 teams." The Iran Football Federation confirmed that the team will depart its base camp in Tijuana, Mexico, on Wednesday, June 24, for Seattle.
Andrew Giuliani, executive director of the White House FIFA Task Force, explained that the extension was planned contingent on the success of earlier movements. "We were going to look at how the first two movements went, and if they went smoothly, we would extend the extra day in light of the longer travel time," Giuliani told The Associated Press. Overall security measures and procedures remain unchanged. The base camp had been relocated from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana earlier in the tournament, and several team officials and support staff members were barred from entering the United States.
The distance to Seattle—approximately 1,930 kilometers from Tijuana—and the difficulty of previous travel, including a five-hour delay for a 204-kilometer flight to Los Angeles, contributed to the request for additional time. FIFA regulations permit teams to travel either one day before a match (MD-1) or in exceptional cases two days before (MD-2), and Iran qualified for this exception. The team is scheduled to train at the University of Washington on Thursday before facing Egypt in their final group-stage match.
Why This Matters
This decision demonstrates how diplomatic tensions between the U.S. and Iran can be pragmatically managed in international sports contexts. For fans and teams, it shows that travel constraints based on security concerns can be adjusted through evidence-based review—setting a precedent for balancing geopolitical caution with fair athletic competition. The move also highlights FIFA's role in advocating for equitable treatment across all participating nations, and signals that persistent advocacy by athletes and governing bodies can yield policy adjustments even in high-stakes political situations.
