Olympic Champion Ingebrigtsen Returns to Competition at European Championships
Two-time Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen confirmed his return to competition at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham on August 10, competing in the 5,000 meters following early-2026 Achilles tendon surgery. His status for the 1,500 meters remains uncertain.
Quick Facts
- Confirmed participation in 5,000 meters at European Championships
- Underwent Achilles tendon surgery in early 2026
- Announced return via Instagram post
- Ramping up training including track work in spikes
- Did not compete in 2026 or Norwegian nationals

Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the two-time Olympic champion from Norway, confirmed on Tuesday that he will compete in the 5,000 meters at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, England, scheduled for August 10–16. The 25-year-old underwent surgery in early 2026 to clean up scar tissue on the protective sheath around his left Achilles tendon and has been progressively rebuilding his training in recent weeks, including track work in spikes during altitude training in St. Moritz.
Ingebrigtsen announced his return through an Instagram post, stating: "What better way than to return to the European Championships, where I have so many golden memories. I'll be lining up for the 5000m August 10th." His participation was confirmed by his spokesperson Espen Skoland, the Norwegian Athletics Federation's sports director Hanne Lyngstad, and federation media contact Øystein Jarlsbo. The 5,000-meter final is scheduled for August 10, the opening day of the championships.
The reigning European champion has not competed in 2026 and did not participate in the Norwegian national championships. His last competition was the World Championships in Tokyo in September 2025, where he failed to advance from the first round of the 1,500 meters and finished tenth in the 5,000-meter final. Ingebrigtsen holds European titles in both the 1,500 and 5,000 meters from the 2024 Rome championships, having also won both distances at the 2022 Munich and 2018 Berlin championships.
The status of his participation in the 1,500 meters—scheduled for August 14–15—remains unconfirmed. Skoland and Lyngstad did not provide clarity on whether Ingebrigtsen would attempt both distances. Norwegian athletics expert Vebjørn Rodal stated he was "a bit uncertain" whether Ingebrigtsen would compete in the 1,500, suggesting the runner may feel more confident in the 5,000 given his recovery status. NRK commentator Jann Post noted the potential risk of competing in both distances given Ingebrigtsen's recent injury history.
Ingebrigtsen addressed concerns about his readiness in a second Instagram post, writing: "If you're waiting for the perfect preparation, perfect conditions, perfect timing, you'll be waiting your whole life. Anyone who has watched me race over the years will know that competition is what drives me. I am healthy, training has been going well and after discussing with my team, we reached the conclusion that there is no reason not to race."

Why This Matters
Ingebrigtsen's return to elite competition marks a measurable test of recovery from Achilles surgery and sets expectations for his performance at the 2026 European Championships. His participation in one or both distances (5,000m on August 10, 1,500m on August 14–15) will indicate his fitness trajectory ahead of future Olympic and World Championship cycles. Coaches and commentators have flagged injury-recurrence risk if he contests both events in his first competition of 2026.
