Russia warns Armenia of higher energy prices if it joins EU

Russia has issued a formal warning to Armenia that it will not be able to continue supplying natural gas and oil products at current prices if the country joins the European Union. Russian Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilyov conveyed this message in a letter delivered by the Russian Embassy in Yerevan on May 27, 2026, addressed to Armenia's Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure.

Tsivilyov emphasized that energy prices in Europe are significantly higher than those currently afforded to Armenia, and that Armenia must understand the economic implications of any shift away from the Eurasian Economic Union toward EU membership. The minister stated that Russia has always treated Armenia as a brotherly nation and that the letter was intended to inform Armenians of potential consequences before any referendum or legislative decision on EU accession takes place.

According to Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, Moscow indicated it would suspend or unilaterally denounce the bilateral agreement on gas, petroleum products, and rough diamond supplies that has been in place since December 2, 2013, should Armenia proceed with EU accession. The warning represents a significant economic pressure point as Armenia considers its geopolitical alignment and regional integration options.
