Colin Farrell Sets High Bar for The Penguin Season 2, Cites Batman Film Priority

Colin Farrell has outlined his conditions for returning to HBO's crime drama series The Penguin for a potential second season, emphasizing that any continuation must justify itself creatively. Speaking to People magazine at the Los Angeles premiere of his Apple TV series Sugar on June 17, the Irish actor stated that while the show has "potential to explore more," the creative team would need to ensure a sophomore season matches the quality of the first.

"Could we justify a second or a third season when the first season was as strong as it was? They're the conversations that we still need to have," Farrell said, praising showrunner Lauren LeFranc's work on the 2024 series. The actor acknowledged that practical constraints are currently preventing such discussions, as Warner Bros. is prioritizing production on The Batman: Part II, scheduled for October 2027 release, in which Farrell plays Penguin in a supporting role.

Farrell indicated that The Penguin's future would likely hinge on the completion of Batman filming. "The powers that be are working very hard on bringing Batman to life now — the second film, so there's no time to get into another season of The Penguin," he explained. "But maybe when the shooting on that is completed, maybe we'll start thinking about a second and third season of Penguin. But it would have to justify itself. It'd have to be amazing."

The first season of The Penguin concluded with Farrell's character Oz Cobb consolidating power in Gotham's underworld after defeating rival Sofia Gigante (Cristin Milioti) and eliminating his associate Vic Aguilar. The series, which debuted in 2024, has not yet received an official greenlight for renewal. Farrell's comments suggest that while the creative team remains open to continuation, any decision will depend on both timing and creative merit.
