Central Government DA Hike Delayed; Cabinet Meeting Postponed
Central government employees await the July 2026 dearness allowance hike, estimated at 3–4% (potentially raising DA from 60% to 63–64%), after the scheduled October 21 Cabinet meeting was postponed. The Finance Ministry can announce the increase independently; officials expect confirmation by October 28 or earlier.
Quick Facts
- Dearness allowance (DA) hike announcement delayed
- Cabinet meeting scheduled for October 21 did not occur
- Lunch-hour protest held by employee confederation on October 16
- Estimation of 3–4% DA increase based on inflation data
- Central government employees

Central government employees in India continue to await an official announcement of the July 2026 dearness allowance (DA) hike. The Cabinet meeting scheduled for October 21, 2026, did not take place as planned, postponing expectations for an immediate announcement.
The current DA rate stands at 60% of basic pay, set in January 2026. Based on inflation data from the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW) covering July 2025 to June 2026, officials and employee associations estimate the hike could range from 3% to 4%, potentially raising the rate to either 63% or 64%. The government has not officially confirmed either figure or a specific announcement date.
While DA revisions typically require Cabinet approval, the Finance Ministry can announce the hike independently without a full meeting. Officials now expect the announcement either at the next Cabinet meeting on October 28 or through a Finance Ministry order issued before then. The delay has prompted protests from employee groups, including the Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers, which held a lunch-hour demonstration on October 16 demanding the announcement.
DA is revised twice yearly, in January and July, to help central government employees and pensioners offset inflation impacts. A 3% increase would mean an additional ₹1,347 monthly for an employee with a ₹44,900 basic salary, equivalent to ₹16,164 annually. Pensioners receive parallel increases in dearness relief (DR) to maintain purchasing power on fixed pensions. The government has provided no official timeline or confirmation of the expected hike amount.
Why This Matters
Approximately 48 lakh central government employees and pensioners in India depend on twice-yearly DA/DR (dearness relief) revisions to maintain purchasing power against inflation. A 3–4% increase would affect monthly salaries and pension payments across all categories; a 3% hike means ₹1,347 additional monthly income for baseline salary brackets. The Cabinet postponement delays formal notification and employee payroll processing; Finance Ministry can act independently, with announcement expected by October 28. Employee unions have already launched protests; further delays may escalate industrial action in government workforce.
