U.S. adds 29,000 jobs in September; unemployment rises to 4.2%
The U.S. added only 29,000 nonfarm payroll jobs in September, missing economist expectations of 84,000–90,000, while the unemployment rate rose to 4.2%. Revisions to prior months reduced combined July and August job gains by 60,000, signaling a decelerating labor market ahead of midterm elections.
Quick Facts
- U.S. added 29,000 nonfarm payroll jobs in September
- Unemployment rate rose to 4.2%
- July and August job gains revised down by 60,000 combined
- July revised from +21,000 to -10,000
- August revised from +162,000 to +133,000

U.S. employers added just 29,000 nonfarm payroll jobs in September, significantly below economist expectations of 84,000–90,000, according to data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday. The unemployment rate increased to 4.2% from 4.1% in August, marking the first monthly rise in three months. The weak report comes one month before the November 3 midterm congressional elections.
Revisions to prior months' data reduced total job gains for July and August by 60,000, intensifying concerns about labor market momentum. July's employment figure was revised from a gain of 21,000 to a loss of 10,000, while August was revised down from 162,000 to 133,000. Average hourly wage growth slowed to 3.0% year-over-year, the smallest annual gain since May 2021, and rose just 0.1% from August.
The report highlights a persistent "low-hire, low-fire" dynamic in the labor market. Hiring remained concentrated in healthcare, which added 17,000 jobs in September—below its 12-month average of 33,000. Construction added 11,000 jobs and manufacturing 9,000, while the financial sector shed 7,000 positions, bringing total losses in that sector to 129,000 since May 2025. Government employment fell by 17,000.
The weaker-than-expected data triggered immediate market reaction. The U.S. Dollar Index declined 0.23%, and financial markets increased bets on a Federal Reserve pause. Kalshi pricing showed an 85% probability the Fed would hold rates in October, up sharply from prior expectations. Treasury yields moved lower, with the 10-year yield falling to 5.17% from 5.24%.
Public sentiment about the economy remains negative despite the historically low unemployment rate. An Associated Press–NORC poll released Thursday showed only 17% of Americans approve of President Donald Trump's handling of cost-of-living issues, and 26% approve of his handling of the economy overall. Consumer confidence dropped to its lowest level in more than a decade, with 28% of respondents expecting fewer jobs in six months. Glassdoor's employee confidence index fell to its lowest level since 2016, reflecting worker anxiety about layoffs and artificial intelligence.
The labor market has shown resilience against trade tensions, inflation, elevated interest rates, and geopolitical conflict with Iran that raised energy costs. However, the September figures suggest the job market is cooling after recovering from a weak 2025.
Why This Matters
U.S. labor market momentum is slowing: September payroll growth missed consensus by 65–75%, prior-month revisions reduced half a year of gains, and unemployment edged upward for the first time in three months. These metrics affect Federal Reserve policy timing (markets now price 85% odds of a rate hold), consumer spending capacity, and real household income via wage growth (now at slowest pace since May 2021). Concentrated sector weakness—financial services down 129,000 since May 2025, government payrolls falling—suggests uneven demand. Timing: one month before midterm elections.
