Game of Thrones First Movie 'Aegon's Conquest' Scheduled for June 2029

Warner Bros. has officially announced the theatrical release of 'Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest,' marking the first feature film in the 'Game of Thrones' franchise. The film is scheduled to release on June 1, 2029, with some sources citing June 6, 2029. Owen Harris, known for directing episodes of 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,' will direct the film from a screenplay by Beau Willimon, the former showrunner of Netflix's 'House of Cards' and a writer on Disney+'s 'Andora.' No cast members have been announced.

The film will center on King Aegon I Targaryen, the founder of the Targaryen dynasty, and his conquest of Westeros several centuries before the events of the original 'Game of Thrones' series. Aegon I has never appeared on screen before in the franchise. According to sources, Aegon I was the first Lord of the Seven Kingdoms who united Westeros with his three dragons: Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes.

This announcement comes as part of a broader expansion of the 'Game of Thrones' universe. HBO is currently developing multiple spinoff series based on George R.R. Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Fire' fantasy novels, including 'House of the Dragon,' which aired its third season in summer 2026, and 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,' which is set to air a new season in early 2027. A fourth and final season of 'House of the Dragon' is scheduled for 2028. The timing of the film's 2029 release is positioned after the other franchise projects conclude their upcoming seasons.

Discussions about a 'Game of Thrones' feature film have occurred since at least 2013, two years after the original HBO series premiered. Series co-creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss had previously pitched three potential feature films to network executives. George R.R. Martin, the author of the source material, had previously turned down opportunities for a 'Game of Thrones' film adaptation, stating concerns about significant plot cuts and character focus limitations. Harris has also directed episodes of 'Black Mirror,' 'Mrs. Davis,' and the 2019 'Twilight Zone' remake, while Willimon created 'House of Cards' and contributed to 'Andora.'
