Yellow Alert Issued for Rochester Area Through Thursday for Gusty Winds and Thunderstorms

A Yellow Alert has been issued for Rochester, New York, and surrounding areas, effective overnight and continuing through Thursday early evening. The primary weather threat is strong winds, with the situation unfolding in two distinct phases. Overnight and into early Thursday morning, weakening storms moving in from the Midwest will bring isolated gusty conditions, with the Finger Lakes region particularly vulnerable to wind gusts reaching 50-55 mph. As the low-pressure system moves away, area-wide winds will intensify, with gusts of 45-50 mph expected from the southwest during mid-morning through mid-afternoon Thursday, especially if sunshine develops. Both windy periods pose risks of isolated power outages and wind damage, particularly given recent wind damage in the region.

While wind remains the primary concern, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are possible throughout the day Thursday, with the highest likelihood of gusty showers or storms occurring late morning into early afternoon. Much of Thursday is expected to remain rain-free between these scattered events. The National Weather Service expects conditions to improve significantly by Thursday evening, with the threat level returning to "green" on the Threat Tracker, indicating more stable weather. The improved conditions should extend into Father's Day weekend, which is expected to feature minimal rain and comfortable temperatures.
