EA Closes BioWare, Cancels Next Mass Effect Game
Electronic Arts shut down BioWare on October 21, 2026, canceling the next Mass Effect game as part of a restructuring that includes 400 layoffs across the company. The closure of the legendary RPG studio, which created iconic franchises over its 30-year history, follows EA's August privatization in a $55 billion leveraged buyout.
Quick Facts
- BioWare studio shutdown announced
- Next Mass Effect game development canceled
- Approximately 400 job layoffs across EA (3% of workforce)
- Approximately 50 jobs cut at BioWare
- Respawn and DICE collaboration on future Star Wars project

Electronic Arts announced on October 21, 2026, that it is shutting down BioWare, the legendary role-playing game studio, and canceling early development on the next Mass Effect title. The closure comes as part of a broader restructuring at EA, which includes approximately 400 layoffs—about 3% of the company's total workforce of 14,500—with roughly 50 positions at BioWare.
BioWare, founded in 1995 by doctors Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, spent over 30 years developing critically acclaimed RPGs including Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect. The studio was acquired by EA in 2007. In a social media statement, BioWare acknowledged its legacy while announcing the closure, stating: "For more than 30 years, BioWare has been more than a studio. It has been a home for storytellers, developers, and the players who brought our worlds to life."
The decision reflects EA's recent strategic shifts following its August 2026 transition to private ownership through a $55 billion leveraged buyout led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners. EA executives Cam Weber and David Tinson cited changing industry dynamics, stating that "players have more choices than ever for their time and attention, competition is intensifying, and some of our biggest opportunities for growth are beyond the markets, platforms, and business models where EA has traditionally been the strongest."
In recent years, BioWare experienced setbacks including the underperformance of 2019's live-service title Anthem and 2023's Dragon Age: The Veilguard missing sales expectations, which prompted staff reductions in 2025. The next Mass Effect game had been in early development, with plans to be set hundreds of years after Mass Effect 3 in the Milky Way galaxy, but will not move forward. The status of Amazon's planned live-action Mass Effect television series remains unclear.
EA indicated that Respawn and DICE studios will collaborate on a future project, widely reported to be Star Wars: Battlefront 3. The company confirmed continued investment in Apex Legends, future Battlefield titles, Marvel's Iron Man, the next Star Wars Jedi game, and new sports titles including a social-first open-world American football game called "Project Gridiron" and a revival of the Fight Night boxing franchise after a 15-year hiatus.
Why This Matters
EA's closure of BioWare eliminates a 30-year-old franchise pipeline (Mass Effect, Dragon Age) and removes ~50 developer positions; the company's recent $55 billion privatization shift (August 2026) signals capital reallocation away from traditional single-player RPG investment toward live-service and sports titles. Affected: franchise IP visibility, player ecosystems (Apex Legends, future Battlefield/Star Wars projects remain active), and labor in game development; measurable next steps include Respawn-DICE Star Wars collaboration and Project Gridiron launch timing.
