LeBron James debuts for 76ers, spoils Knicks' title celebration 106-100

LeBron James made his Philadelphia 76ers debut on NBA opening night, contributing 14 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists in a 106-100 victory over the defending champion New York Knicks. Tyrese Maxey led the 76ers with 28 points, while Jaylen Brown, playing his first game after being acquired from the Boston Celtics, scored 19 points with eight rebounds and six assists. The win came after the Knicks celebrated their first NBA championship since 1973, raising their banner and receiving rings before the game at Madison Square Garden.

The 41-year-old James, entering his 24th NBA season following his summer move from the Los Angeles Lakers, demonstrated the versatility that shaped the 76ers' offseason strategy. Coach Nick Nurse switched defensive assignments in the second half, positioning James on Karl-Anthony Towns while Joel Embiid defended Josh Hart. James spent much of the game as a facilitator, making smart passes to create scoring opportunities for teammates. The 76ers' reserves, including Anfernee Simons and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, capitalized on open looks created by defensive focus on Philadelphia's stars.

The game was competitive throughout. The Knicks led by as many as 10 points in the first half, but the 76ers closed the third quarter with an 11-0 run, capped by Brown's three-pointer at the buzzer for an 83-76 advantage. The Knicks, led by NBA Finals MVP Jalen Brunson's 21 points on 6-for-19 shooting, cut the deficit to one point at 96-95, but Embiid answered with a three-pointer to secure the lead. The Knicks shot 37% overall and 33.3% from three-point range. Karl-Anthony Towns added 19 points and 12 rebounds for New York, while Embiid finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists.

James described his performance with measured expectations, telling NBC: "I could be a lot better. Still getting my rhythm, obviously just a little bit over two weeks with the new squad. But I like the way we played. I think we played exceptionally well, especially defensively." Coach Nurse noted that other NBA coaches had positive things to say about James. "They say you're gonna really like coaching him, and that is the case," Nurse said, praising both James and Brown for their work ethic and commitment to winning.

The Knicks' loss marked a sharp contrast to their dominant performance in the previous season's playoffs, when they swept the 76ers in the second round en route to their championship. The 76ers made significant roster moves in the offseason, acquiring James and Brown to build what management intended as a title contender. Some Knicks fans expressed their disapproval of James' free agency decision, with "We don't want you" chants directed at him during his free throw attempts, referencing comments from his agent Rich Paul about the Knicks' championship drought.
