After Four Years in Russia, He Is Going Home: The Stephen Hubbard Release, Explained Yesterday, Explained · YouTube
Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old former American teacher from Michigan, was released from Russian custody on October 21, 2026, after more than four years in detention. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the release during a meeting with US Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff in St. Petersburg, stating that Hubbard was already at Pulkovo Airport. The release occurred without a prisoner exchange—a departure from typical practice in such cases.
Hubbard was arrested in April 2022 in the eastern Ukrainian city of Izyum and was convicted in October 2024 by Moscow City Court of participating in combat operations on behalf of Ukrainian forces. He was sentenced to six years and ten months in a general-regime penal colony. Hubbard confessed to the charges in court, though his American lawyer Martin De Luca had previously stated that Hubbard denied the allegations and asserted he never joined any combat or military unit. His time in custody since April 2022 was credited toward his sentence, effectively securing his release.
President Donald Trump stated he had directly requested Hubbard's release from Putin and later said that imposing new sanctions would have halted negotiations. Trump described Hubbard as "a very high quality, innocent man" and noted his family was traveling with him on his return to the United States. According to reports, Hubbard was in poor health and expected to receive treatment in Texas.
The release took place as Witkoff visited Russia following earlier meetings in Oslo with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European officials. During his St. Petersburg meeting with Putin, Witkoff presented proposals for peace negotiations and described the Russian leader as "a humanitarian," remarks that drew criticism from some US Republican lawmakers. The US State Department classified the release as "a welcome step" and noted that no Americans are currently determined to be wrongfully detained in Russia following Hubbard's release.
Hubbard's sister, Patricia Fox Hubbard, told media outlets that her brother had feared he would "die in prison" and reported he had suffered beatings and starvation during his detention. His son, Joseph Coleman, said he had prayed for years for his father's release and described it as "a gift of mercy." Hubbard's lawyer noted that the former teacher was in "fragile" health but "excited to see family."
Why This Matters
The release of a US citizen held by Russia for over four years signals a shift in US-Russia diplomatic engagement under new US leadership. Measurable effects include: Hubbard's return to the US for medical care after reported deterioration in custody; potential precedent for unilateral releases without formal prisoner exchanges; impact on US-Russia negotiations framework, with envoy Witkoff presenting peace proposals during the same St. Petersburg meeting; and possible influence on congressional and international assessment of US engagement strategy with Russia amid ongoing Ukraine conflict.
