Sales of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids in Russia are expected to double by the end of 2026 compared to 2025 levels, according to Sergey Tselikov, head of Autostat, a Russian automotive analytics agency. Over 100,000 combined electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles are projected to be sold in Russia during 2026, driven by strong momentum in the first nine months of the year.
During the first nine months of 2026, 11,400 pure electric vehicles and 58,700 plug-in hybrids were registered in Russia. EV sales grew 42 percent year-over-year, while plug-in hybrid sales increased 2.5-fold. Market share figures show pure EVs accounted for 1.2 percent of the market through September, while plug-in hybrids reached 6.1 percent. By September, these shares had risen to 2.6 percent and 8.2 percent respectively, indicating accelerating adoption rates.
Market participants at the CarX 2026 forum attributed the growth to a global trend in EV adoption, with China leading the shift. Tselikov noted that EV adoption will likely continue to expand even if fuel supply conditions normalize. According to market surveys cited at the forum, 88 percent of current EV owners indicated they would purchase another electric vehicle as their next car, suggesting strong consumer retention in the segment.
Manufacturers are expected to expand their electric-drive model offerings as prices decline and technology improves. Experts anticipate that improving charging speeds and vehicle range will make electric-drive models increasingly competitive and affordable in coming years.

Why This Matters
Russian electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle sales are expanding rapidly, with registered units climbing from baseline levels to over 100,000 projected annually by 2026. This shift affects automotive supply chains, energy infrastructure demand (charging networks), and vehicle pricing in Russia's passenger car market. Manufacturers are responding by expanding electric-drive product lines; adoption rates suggest sustained consumer demand even if market conditions stabilize.
