Brig. Gen. Mohammad Akraminia, a spokesman for Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), confirmed on November 1 that Iran has purchased Russian-made Su-35 fighter jets and expects delivery after the current conflict concludes. Speaking to the Iranian news outlet Tabnak, Akraminia stated that the aircraft were originally scheduled to arrive before the war began in late February, but delivery has been postponed until hostilities cease.
Akraminia said procurement contracts have been finalized and pilot training is complete. "We had already completed the necessary preliminary work, including the procurement process and the signing of contracts. The necessary work concerning pilot training and instruction had also been completed," he stated. He emphasized that the Su-35s are part of Iran's strategy to strengthen its air defense capabilities in the post-conflict period.
The IRGC spokesman outlined broader plans to upgrade Iran's military infrastructure. He indicated that Iran is developing ground-based radar systems, airborne systems, and satellites to support advanced aircraft operations. "When you operate an advanced aircraft such as the Su-35, you must also have ground-based systems, airborne systems, and satellite capabilities supporting it," Akraminia explained. He added that Iran is pursuing domestic military development alongside foreign procurement to reduce technological dependence.
Akraminia attributed delays in weapons acquisition to US sanctions. "The Americans have absolutely refused to allow these new technologies to enter our country. They have imposed very severe sanctions," he said, while claiming that Iran has relied on domestically developed capabilities during conflicts. The Su-35 is a Russian fighter jet designed and manufactured by Sukhoi, part of Russia's United Aircraft Corporation, though Russia permits other nations to operate the aircraft.
Why This Matters
Iran's acquisition of advanced Russian fighter jets signals the country's post-conflict military modernization strategy, with implications for regional air defense capabilities and military balance. The procurement reflects ongoing military-technical cooperation between Iran and Russia, and Russia's willingness to supply advanced systems despite international sanctions. Delivery timelines depend on cessation of current hostilities, making the duration of the conflict a material variable for Iran's defense posture timeline.
