Some demonstrations turned violent. Protesters in cities including Lille, Bordeaux, Rennes, Lyon, Nantes, and Marseille set fire to rubbish bins, threw bottles and paving stones at police, and damaged bus shelters and advertising hoardings. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez reported that 48 law enforcement officers were injured, and seven incidents occurred in which hydrochloric acid was thrown at police. Officers responded with batons and tear gas. Approximately two-thirds of the 440 detained were placed in police custody.

Education Minister Édouard Geffray stated that students have the right to demonstrate but condemned violence as "indefensible" and "irresponsible." Union Syndicale Lycéenne, a student representative organization, accused the government of "repression" and police of using excessive force. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu warned on 28 September that any escalation would be "irresponsible," citing incidents including fires and violence near schools.

The student protests coincided on Tuesday with nationwide public sector strikes by teachers, hospital staff, and civil servants protesting low wages, working conditions, and planned government budget cuts. At least 200,000 public sector workers participated, with most demonstrations proceeding without incident. France faces budget pressures, with state debt reaching 119% of GDP and annual debt servicing consuming approximately 79 billion euros.
