Christian Norgaard joins Everton from Arsenal on £7m deal
Christian Norgaard has joined Everton from Arsenal on a two-year contract for £7 million after limited playing time at the Emirates. The 32-year-old Danish midfielder becomes Everton's fourth summer signing and is expected to provide experience in central midfield following Idrissa Gana Gueye's departure.
Quick Facts
- Christian Norgaard transferred from Arsenal to Everton
- Norgaard signed a two-year contract
- Norgaard omitted from Arsenal pre-season squad
- Everton signed Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough
- Everton signed Tyrique George from Chelsea

Christian Norgaard has completed his move to Everton from Arsenal, signing a two-year contract for a reported fee of £7 million. The 32-year-old Denmark international, who joined Arsenal from Brentford for approximately £15 million the previous summer, made limited impact at the Emirates, appearing in only 20 matches across all competitions and just seven Premier League appearances as Arsenal won their first title in 22 years.
Norgaard's departure comes after he was omitted from Arsenal's pre-season squad, signaling the imminent transfer. The midfielder is expected to feature in Everton's upcoming friendly against Stuttgart on 8 August. He joins Everton as a replacement for Idrissa Gana Gueye in central midfield, following Gueye's departure as a free agent. Manager David Moyes has been rebuilding the squad following departures of experienced players including 37-year-old Seamus Coleman and 36-year-old Idrissa Gueye.
Norgaard becomes Everton's fourth summer signing, following midfielders Merlin Rohl and Hayden Hackney (£16.5 million from Middlesbrough), and winger Tyrique George (£18 million from Chelsea). In his statement, Norgaard expressed his desire for increased playing time, stating he "needed a change and to play a bigger football role." He praised Everton's project under Moyes and highlighted the club's atmosphere, referencing both the historic Goodison Park and the new stadium.
Norgaard spent six seasons at Brentford before his move to Arsenal, where he captained the side and made 196 appearances. Despite a title winner's medal earned largely from the bench at Arsenal, the midfielder will seek regular first-team football at Everton. Everton's Premier League season begins on 22 August against Crystal Palace at home. Elsewhere, Arsenal have agreed a £75 million deal with Newcastle United for Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes as Norgaard's replacement.
Why This Matters
Everton secures midfield depth following Idrissa Gana Gueye's departure as free agent; the club's Premier League season opener is 22 August against Crystal Palace. Norgaard, aged 32 with limited recent playing time (7 Premier League appearances in 2023–24), seeks regular first-team football at his new club. Arsenal, meanwhile, moves to recruit Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle (£75 million) as a midfield replacement. Squad composition and depth chart changes may affect both clubs' tactical flexibility and starting lineups in the opening weeks of the 2024–25 season.
