AFC delays 2027 Asian Cup to December, citing Middle East security concerns
The AFC postponed the 2027 Asian Cup from early 2027 to late December 2027 – January 2028 due to Middle East security and logistical concerns, keeping the tournament in Saudi Arabia. Indonesian PSSI chief Erick Thohir viewed the delay as beneficial for extended team preparation through additional international matches throughout 2027.
Quick Facts
- AFC postponed 2027 Asian Cup tournament
- AFC consulted with Local Organizing Committee and SAFF
- Tournament rescheduled to new dates
- Indonesia placed in Group F
- Erick Thohir expressed support for postponement as beneficial for preparation

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) officially postponed the 2027 AFC Asian Cup from January 7 – February 5, 2027 to December 23, 2027 – January 21, 2028. The tournament remains hosted in Saudi Arabia. AFC cited "extraordinary circumstances" arising from developments in the Middle East region, including substantial logistical complexities and travel disruptions, as the reason for the delay. The AFC stated the postponement was necessary in the interests of all participating teams, officials, spectators, and stakeholders.
The 2027 Asian Cup will feature 24 nations, including Indonesia, competing across 51 matches in eight stadiums located in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Khobar. Indonesia was drawn into Group F alongside Japan, Qatar, and Thailand. The rescheduled tournament schedule requires AFC approval from FIFA.
Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) chairman Erick Thohir characterized the postponement as advantageous for the Indonesian national team. He stated the extended preparation period would allow the squad to utilize four FIFA international match windows scheduled throughout 2027—in March and June—to enhance performance before the tournament. Thohir noted that additional international fixtures planned for September, October, and November (including World Cup qualifiers) would provide continuous competitive opportunities without interruption.
The postponement generated mixed reactions among Indonesian social media users. Some expressed frustration at the extended wait, while others viewed the additional preparation time positively, noting opportunities for injured players to recover and for coaching staff under John Herdman to develop team cohesion. One concern raised involved previously arranged viewing preparations, with one user noting they had already purchased a projector in anticipation of the original January 2027 dates.
Why This Matters
The AFC's rescheduling of the 2027 Asian Cup affects 24 participating nations' competition calendars, player recovery timelines, and stadium scheduling in Saudi Arabia. The 6-month delay extends the preparation window for squads like Indonesia—enabling use of FIFA international match windows in March, June, September, October, and November 2027—while requiring coordination adjustments across broadcasting, ticketing, accommodation, and travel logistics for fans, officials, and teams. Rescheduled dates now compete with late-calendar World Cup qualifying windows and other confederation fixtures.
