Real Madrid demands La Liga president's resignation over Nazi propaganda comparison

Real Madrid has demanded the immediate resignation of La Liga president Javier Tebas after he compared the club's media strategy to Nazi propaganda techniques on social media Friday. Tebas criticized Real Madrid TV's coverage of refereeing decisions, stating that the club's communication methods "remind one of the propaganda techniques that Goebbels used: systematic repetition, construction of an enemy, and subordination of facts to the narrative."

In his post, Tebas described Real Madrid's management as directing "an orchestra of mouthpieces" with Real Madrid TV as the lead voice, alleging the club selectively presents plays, repeats grievances, feeds suspicion, and points to enemies. He specified that his comparison referred only to communication techniques, not ideology or Real Madrid supporters. Despite this clarification, Real Madrid issued a formal statement calling the remarks "absolutely intolerable," "deeply offensive," and "morally repugnant." The club demanded Tebas resign from both his position as La Liga president and vice-president of the Spanish Football Association (RFEF), stating his conduct demonstrates "a lack of neutrality, respect, and impartiality incompatible with his institutional responsibilities."

Tebas subsequently defended his comparison in a further post, noting that Goebbels' propaganda techniques are studied in journalism and communications courses to help recognize such mechanisms in contemporary media. He maintained the debate should focus on methods and facts rather than demands for his resignation. Real Madrid rejected this clarification, asserting it did not mitigate the "institutionally unworthy nature" of the statements.

The dispute reflects longstanding tensions between the parties rooted in several issues. Real Madrid has repeatedly criticized La Liga's handling of an ongoing judicial investigation into Barcelona's alleged payments to a refereeing official. The club has also cited Tebas's historical opposition to Real Madrid's European Super League proposal in 2021. Coach José Mourinho publicly intervened, stating that invoking Nazi propaganda crosses a line that requires serious justification and expressing concern about protecting La Liga's international reputation. The conflict represents a significant escalation in a years-long clash between Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez and Tebas.
