The event, discussing whether the West should be 'suspicious of Islam,' has prompted strict security measures, including ticketing and background checks. A former senior official told Byline Times that attendees must apply for tickets and will only be admitted after police screening, which may occur without their knowledge. The union has not denied this claim.

Local streets and several pubs will be closed due to expected protests and a tense atmosphere in the community. The Jolly Farmers pub posted a plea on Facebook asking organizers to cancel the event, warning that businesses are boarding up windows and police are visiting venues with warnings of risk. The White Rabbit pub also closed early, citing solidarity with other independent businesses and safety concerns for staff and customers. The closures coincide with England's first World Cup game, affecting businesses hoping for a busy evening.

Local Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran condemned the event, stating it 'has caused deep concern across Oxfordshire' and that inflammatory rhetoric risks increasing fear and division. However, Oxford Union President Arwa Elrayess, a Palestinian woman, has pushed for the debate to proceed on free speech grounds, despite facing a no-confidence motion earlier this month, which failed. The union's position is partly based on the fact that Robinson previously addressed the Oxford Union in 2016.
