SpaceX Restricts Starlink Speed to 160 km/h, Disrupting Ukrainian Drone Operations
SpaceX restricted Starlink connectivity to speeds below 160 km/h overnight on October 14, forcing Ukraine to cancel medium-range drone missions without prior warning. The move coincides with heavy Russian missile and drone strikes that cut power to 600,000 Ukrainians and killed three people in Kyiv.
Quick Facts
- SpaceX implemented speed restrictions on Starlink terminals
- Ukrainian drone missions were cancelled
- Russian launched 39 ballistic and cruise missiles and 128 drones
- Four Russian missiles and 115 drones were shot down by Ukraine
- Critical energy infrastructure was damaged in Kyiv and Kharkiv

SpaceX implemented overnight speed restrictions on Starlink terminals used by Ukraine's military, limiting connectivity to devices traveling below 160 km/h (100 mph). The restriction, introduced without prior notification, has disrupted Ukrainian drone operations, particularly medium-range and interceptor drones that require high-speed flight to reach targets. Sergey Beskrestnov, adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky on communications and unmanned systems, reported the change on October 14 and stated that "a number of missions" had already been disrupted. Ukrainian military units, including the 7th Corps of the airborne assault troops, confirmed that some drone missions had been cancelled since the restrictions took effect. Beskrestnov suggested the timing "cannot be a coincidence and is related to the current political situation," though SpaceX has not publicly commented on the restrictions or their rationale.
The speed limits arrive amid intensified Russian military operations. On the night of October 13–14, Russia launched 39 ballistic and cruise missiles and 128 drones at Ukrainian targets, with four missiles and 115 drones reported shot down by Ukraine's air force. The strikes damaged critical energy infrastructure, leaving at least 600,000 people without electricity across Ukraine, including in Kyiv and Kharkiv. Three people were killed in Kyiv, according to local officials. Russia's Defence Ministry claimed its strikes targeted communications and energy facilities used by Ukraine's military.
Ukrainian defence ministry sources told the BBC that once a vehicle or asset exceeds the 160 km/h threshold, the Starlink terminal loses connection, degrading capabilities for drone operations, front-line logistics, reconnaissance, and signal relaying. Starlink is central to Ukraine's air defence, enabling interception of Russia's recently developed jet-propelled drones. The restrictions compound existing challenges: Ukraine has said the US threatened to restrict intelligence sharing unless Kyiv signed up to a proposed "energy ceasefire" between Russia and Ukraine announced by US President Donald Trump on October 12. Trump denied on October 13 that Washington was withholding intelligence. Zelensky has stated that Ukraine is ready to halt strikes on Russian energy facilities if Russia does the same, but Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has declined to grant such a "respite."
Why This Matters
Starlink provides critical connectivity for Ukrainian military operations including air defence, drone operations, and front-line communications. The overnight speed restriction to 160 km/h disrupts medium-range and interceptor drone missions that require higher-speed flight. The timing coincides with intensified Russian strikes targeting energy and communications infrastructure. Ukraine's military capabilities for reconnaissance, logistics, and interception of Russian aerial platforms are directly affected by the connectivity loss. US-proposed "energy ceasefire" negotiations and intelligence-sharing disputes add operational uncertainty to Ukrainian forces.
