Chinese and Philippine vessels collide near Spratly Islands; both sides blame each other

A collision between a Chinese coast guard vessel and a Philippine government fisheries ship occurred on September 18 near Xianbin Jiao in the Spratly Islands (Nansha Qundao). The incident marks another escalation of tensions in the disputed South China Sea.

China's Coast Guard spokesperson Jiang Lue stated that the Chinese vessel Sanzhou'ao was conducting lawful rights protection and law enforcement operations when Philippine vessel 3015 ignored repeated warnings, deliberately altered course, and suddenly accelerated diagonally across the bow of the Chinese ship, resulting in a collision. China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun characterized the Philippine vessel's actions as a deliberate ramming that posed a serious threat to Chinese personnel and vessels and violated international law. China called on the Philippines to immediately cease maritime infringements and provocations, warning that all consequences would be borne by the Philippine side.

The Philippines offered a different account. According to Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela, at 11:04 a.m., Chinese Coast Guard vessel 21585 crossed in front of the Philippine ship BRP Datu Magat Salamat at a distance of approximately 10 meters. Nine minutes later, the Chinese vessel repeated the maneuver and collided with the Philippine ship at 11:13 a.m. The Philippine vessel, engaged in a supply mission to deliver fuel to Filipino fishermen, sustained damage to its starboard side, with railings bent and damaged, and debris scattered across the deck. Video footage released by Philippine authorities showed crew members shouting "Prepare for impact!" seconds before the collision.

Both nations have accused each other of violating international law and engaging in provocative behavior. China asserted that its coast guard vessel operated in a professional, standardized, and lawful manner, placing full responsibility on the Philippine side. The Philippines has not yet issued an official diplomatic response beyond the Coast Guard's statement. This incident reflects the ongoing dispute over maritime jurisdiction and resource access in the South China Sea, a region claimed or contested by multiple nations.
