A frontal system is forecast to arrive in continental Chile on Friday, June 19, and move northward, bringing precipitation to central regions. According to meteorologist Jaime Leyton of Megatiempo, the system could potentially reach the Metropolitan Region in the early morning hours of Sunday, June 21, which coincides with the winter solstice and Father's Day celebrations in Chile.
The frontal system is expected to bring normal to moderate rainfall activity to the Los Ríos and Los Lagos regions, with some areas experiencing moderate precipitation. As the system moves north through La Araucanía and the Biobío region, precipitation will weaken to light but regular rainfall. The central zone, particularly the Maule region, will experience only weak and non-generalized precipitation as the system arrives in a weakened state.
The Metropolitan Region faces significantly lower chances of precipitation from this frontal system. Leyton emphasized that if any rainfall does occur in the RM on Sunday morning, it would be extremely minimal, potentially measuring only a tenth of a millimeter. The system is expected to enter the area north of Maule in a notably weakened condition, making it unlikely to produce substantial precipitation in the precordillera foothills of O'Higgins or the capital region.
Why This Matters
This weather system is significant for residents and farmers across central Chile planning activities for the winter solstice and Father's Day weekend. While southern regions expect measurable rainfall, the Metropolitan Region—home to over half of Chile's population—faces minimal precipitation, which could impact water availability in an arid climate. Understanding the system's weakening trajectory helps residents and emergency managers prepare accordingly and adjust outdoor plans.
