Buffett's Three Children Undecided on Managing $150 Billion Estate
Warren Buffett's three children—Susie, Howard, and Peter—remain undecided on how to distribute their father's approximately $150 billion estate after his death. Each pursues different charitable causes, and any distribution plan requires unanimous agreement among all three siblings. They have not yet determined whether to coordinate giving jointly or manage separate philanthropic portfolios.
Quick Facts
- Three children uncertain about managing estate
- Children must unanimously agree on charitable distributions
- Estate to be distributed to charity
- Buffett removed Gates Foundation from will
- Howard Buffett became Berkshire Hathaway chairman in September 2026

Warren Buffett's three children—Susie (73), Howard (71), and Peter (68)—remain uncertain about how to manage their father's approximately $150 billion estate after his death. The 96-year-old billionaire has pledged to give away the vast majority of his wealth, with any remaining funds required to be distributed to charity by his heirs. Under the terms of Buffett's arrangements, the three siblings must agree unanimously on all charitable distributions, a requirement that complicates their planning.
Each child directs different charitable priorities through existing foundations. Susie Buffett focuses on early childhood education and social projects in Omaha through the Sherwood Foundation. Howard Buffett, who became chairman of Berkshire Hathaway's board in September 2026, prioritizes food security and humanitarian aid to conflict-affected regions; by late 2025 he had directed over $1.2 billion to Ukraine, among other commitments. Peter Buffett, a musician, manages the NoVo Foundation and has expressed interest in universal basic income initiatives. However, Peter has stated reservations about managing such vast sums, saying years ago that he asked his father not to impose this responsibility on him.
According to Bloomberg calculations, if Buffett's wealth grows at 10 percent annually and his children distribute the estate over 20 years, they would need to donate approximately $17.6 billion annually to charity. The siblings have not yet decided whether to coordinate their charitable giving collectively or pursue separate funding strategies. Susie Buffett acknowledged the uncertainty directly, stating: "We don't know. Pока не знаем" (We still don't know).
Buffett has already donated over $70 billion since 2006, primarily through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation until July 2026. In June 2024, he removed the Gates Foundation from his will, citing the foundation's leadership changes following Bill Gates' divorce and other factors. In its place, Buffett announced plans to direct remaining Berkshire Hathaway shares to four family charitable foundations—those of his three children and the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, named after his late wife—by the end of 2034. All three children have expressed a desire to distribute the capital during their lifetimes but doubt whether they can meet this goal. Peter Buffett has publicly questioned the propriety of any individual managing such sums, calling it "simply unnatural."
Why This Matters
With an estimated $150 billion estate required by law to pass to charity, the lack of unified distribution strategy affects philanthropic capital allocation globally over the next two decades. If the estate grows at 10 percent annually over a 20-year distribution period, the three siblings face a requirement to donate approximately $17.6 billion annually. Their inability to reach consensus on a joint approach could delay or fragment strategic giving in areas including early childhood education, food security, humanitarian aid, and universal basic income initiatives. The arrangement requires unanimous agreement among all three heirs, creating a structural bottleneck for one of the largest charitable wealth transfers in history.
