Nita Ambani Showcases Hand-Embroidered Chikankari Saree Honoring Mughal Legacy

Nita Ambani recently wore a hand-embroidered antique mauve chiffon chikankari saree at a public appearance, demonstrating her commitment to preserving India's textile heritage through quiet luxury and meticulous craftsmanship. The saree, created by Lucknow-based master artisan Anjani Kashyap over the course of a year, features traditional do taar chikankari techniques alongside intricate jaali, murri, ghaas patti, and balda work. The delicate floral jaals float across the sheer fabric in a soft, whisper-like palette that requires sustained attention to fully appreciate its artistry. Paired with a custom high-neck organza-and-lace blouse designed by Manish Malhotra—complete with pleated textures, pin-tuck detailing, and subtle frill accents—the ensemble celebrated understated elegance and craftsmanship.

The saree is part of Swadesh India, a craft-focused initiative Ambani founded in 2023 to promote and preserve India's age-old arts and crafts. The design draws inspiration from the historical legacy of Mughal empress Noor Jahan, who played a pivotal role in popularizing chikankari embroidery during her reign. Born as Mehr-un-Nissa, Noor Jahan was one of the most powerful women of the Mughal period and an active patron of the arts. Historians credit her with encouraging embroidered textiles within the imperial palace, and her influence helped establish chikankari as a signature art form of Lucknow. The term itself derives from the Persian word "chikan," meaning embroidery.

The styling approach emphasized restraint and balance, allowing the saree's intricate embroidery to remain the focal point. Ambani accessorized with minimal jewellery—diamond drop earrings, a diamond bangle, a statement ring, and a watch—and styled her hair in a centre-parted low bun adorned with fresh purple rose flowers and a matching bindi. Her makeup remained minimal, featuring kohl-rimmed eyes, defined lashes, and pink lips. The purple floral accessory subtly echoed the floral motifs embroidered across the saree, creating visual harmony throughout the ensemble.

Chikankari work is traditionally executed using white and pastel-colored threads on thin, delicate fabrics and involves various stitching methods including back, chain, and satin stitching. The specific styles of jaali, murri, ghaas patti, and balda work have become distinct hallmarks of the craft over centuries. By choosing to wear this meticulously crafted piece, Ambani highlighted the artisans whose skill and patience continue to sustain these centuries-old traditions, positioning the saree not merely as a fashion statement but as a celebration of Indian heritage and the value of slow, deliberate craftsmanship in an age of rapid consumption.
