A Learjet 60 business jet crashed in a residential neighborhood in Palm Beach County, Florida, on November 1, 2026, at 12:50 p.m. Eastern Time, killing all nine people on board. The aircraft was en route from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas when it struck near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North, creating a crater and erupting in a massive fireball visible on dashcam and eyewitness video. The crash site is located approximately 11 kilometers south of Mar-a-Lago; President Donald Trump had departed the area on Air Force One roughly one hour prior to the incident.
Minutes before the crash, the pilot reported ice accumulating on the aircraft, an outside air temperature of minus 47 degrees Celsius (minus 52 degrees Fahrenheit), and moderate turbulence jolting the plane by up to 700 feet. After encountering precipitation and requesting to climb, the pilot declared a mayday emergency, reporting the aircraft descending at rates between 10,000 and 20,000 feet per minute and noting an "overspeed condition." Flight tracking data shows the jet descended approximately 27,000 feet in one minute before the signal cut off. The pilot's final transmission stated: "We're going to crash into the ground."
The impact created a significant debris field and forced the evacuation of approximately 600 people from a nearby mobile home community. No fatalities on the ground were reported. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the crash as "cataclysmic," stating it "looked like a missile going down" and left a large crater in the road. All lanes of Military Trail between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North were closed to traffic.
According to National Transportation Safety Board records, this is the second-deadliest aviation accident in the United States in 2026, following a skydiving aircraft crash in Butler, Missouri, in June that killed 12 people. The Learjet 60 is registered to a Delaware limited liability company and was listed as available for charter online. The FAA and NTSB launched a joint investigation into the crash. Weather conditions in the area at the time included scattered thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and a flood watch was in effect.
Why This Matters
This incident is the second-deadliest aviation accident in the United States in 2026. The crash forced evacuation of approximately 600 nearby residents and closed a major road (Military Trail) to traffic. The aircraft's structural failure or loss of control during severe icing and turbulence will be examined by NTSB and FAA to determine if design, maintenance, or operational factors contributed; findings may affect certification, maintenance requirements, or operational procedures for similar aircraft or flight conditions. Weather-related aviation incidents inform pilot training, aircraft anti-icing system standards, and regulatory guidance on flight paths during severe weather.
