Kim Gordon, former Sonic Youth member, performed her recent single 'Play Me' on 'The Tonight Show' on Thursday night. Dressed in a Knicks jersey, she took the stage with her band to deliver the blues-y rock track from her third solo album of the same name.
Released in March, 'Play Me' is Gordon's third solo LP and features a more beat-oriented sound compared to her previous work. She collaborated again with producer Justin Raisen, who worked on her past two solo efforts. Gordon explained that the album's lyrics were heavily influenced by current events, describing the era as a 'post empire' where people 'just disappear.'
Discussing her vocal style, Gordon told Rolling Stone that she does not consider herself a traditional singer: 'I don't have the kind of voice to be a singer-singer, and I get really inspired by rhythm and beats. Occasionally a melody will pop out of somewhere accidentally, but this kind of vocal just feels most natural for me.' She added, 'I see the music I'm making now as really — without sounding pretentious — it is kind of my art, in a way. It's not really aspiring to be anything else.'
Gordon is currently touring in support of 'Play Me.' She performed in New York City on the night of the show and will continue touring across the U.S. through the summer, including a performance at Summerfest in Milwaukee in June.
