Hokuriku Electric's 550,000 email addresses exposed in contractor breach
Hokuriku Electric announced that 550,000 email addresses from its Hokulink member service were exposed via unauthorized access to an external contractor's email distribution platform between October 28–31. Only email addresses were compromised; no other personal data was affected. The same contractor's breach also impacted Nyuzen Town's municipal email services.
Quick Facts
- Unauthorized access to an email distribution service
- Exposure of 550,000 Hokulink member email addresses
- Broader breach affecting approximately 7,700 records from up to 380 companies
- Email distribution service suspended
- Company notified members via mobile app

Hokuriku Electric Power Company announced on November 2 that approximately 550,000 email addresses of members registered with its member service "Hokulink" were exposed due to an unauthorized access incident. The breach occurred at an external contractor's email distribution service that Hokuriku Electric uses to send messages to Hokulink members.
According to Hokuriku Electric, the unauthorized access took place between October 28 and 31. The affected contractor experienced a broader data breach affecting up to 7,700 individual records from approximately 380 companies, of which Hokulink member email addresses comprised about 550,000. The contractor has suspended all email distribution services, with no timeline provided for resumption.
Hokuriku Electric confirmed that only email addresses were exposed; no other personal information such as names, account details, or payment data was compromised. As of late September, Hokulink had approximately 676,000 registered members. The company notified members through its mobile app on the afternoon of November 2, apologizing for the incident and advising users to be cautious of suspicious emails.
The same contractor also provided email services to Nyuzen Town in Toyama Prefecture for its "Marriage Support Email Magazine" and "Childcare Support Email Magazine," which similarly had registered user email addresses potentially exposed in the breach.

Why This Matters
Hokuriku Electric's 550,000 affected members face increased risk of phishing and spam targeting their email addresses; the company's reliance on a third-party contractor whose security failed creates liability and operational continuity concerns. The broader breach affecting approximately 380 companies and up to 7,700 records indicates systemic vulnerability in the contractor's infrastructure. Service suspension of the email distribution platform affects both Hokuriku Electric's marketing communications and Nyuzen Town's municipal services; resumption timeline remains unspecified.
