Miroslav Koubek, the head coach of the Czech Republic, has vowed a 'different' and 'more dangerous' style of play when his team faces South Africa in a crucial World Cup group stage match. Both sides are desperate for points after suffering defeats in their opening games, making the encounter in Atlanta a must-win for any hope of advancing to the knockout rounds.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the match, which will be officiated by American referee Tori Pens, Koubek acknowledged the threat posed by South Africa. He emphasized the need to 'neutralize their strengths and their ability to break through, and at the same time, be more dangerous in attack.' The Czechs lost their first match 2-1 to South Korea, with Koubek noting that the South Koreans offered few opportunities due to 'their mobility and aggressiveness,' but he insisted this time would be different.
Koubek confirmed there would be changes to the lineup from the team that started in Guadalajara, where the altitude exceeded 1,600 meters. Left-back David Jurasek will miss the remainder of the tournament after suffering a serious thigh muscle injury during training. His place is expected to be taken by Jaroslav Zelený.
'We believe we can improve our ball possession, that we will be more precise in our combinations, and that we will work to create dangerous situations for the opponent,' Koubek added. The veteran coach, one of the oldest in the tournament, is making his World Cup debut.
Koubek also expressed criticism towards the management of youth football in his country, drawing a parallel to the situation 20 years ago when the majority of Czech national team players—the generation of Tomas Rosicky, Marek Jankulovsky, and Karel Poborsky—came from top European clubs, unlike today. 'It is related to the development of football and the training of young players. If they don't reach the best clubs, then, of course, something is wrong—not in the Danish state, but in the Czech one,' he explained.
Why This Matters
This match is critical for both teams' knockout stage aspirations. Understanding the tactical shift promised by the Czech coach helps readers anticipate the game's dynamics and potential upsets in Group Stage play.
