Chelsea's João Pedro sidelined for weeks with thigh injury
Chelsea forward João Pedro will miss several weeks after sustaining a thigh injury in training, confirmed by manager Xabi Alonso on 27 October. The Brazilian has scored five goals in seven appearances this season. Emmanuel Emegha, a summer signing from Strasbourg, is set to return to the squad after recovering from a hamstring injury.
Quick Facts
- João Pedro sustained a thigh injury during training
- Alonso confirmed Pedro will miss several weeks
- Medical tests identified fluid around the injury
- Pedro ruled out of Tottenham match (24 October)
- Pedro ruled out of Liverpool Carabao Cup fixture (28 October)

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso confirmed on 27 October that forward João Pedro will miss several weeks with a thigh injury sustained during training ahead of the club's match against Tottenham Hotspur. The Brazilian striker was ruled out of the 2–0 home defeat to Spurs on 24 October and will also miss the Carabao Cup fourth-round tie at Liverpool the following day.
Alonso revealed that medical tests identified fluid around the injury site. "He has an injury on his thigh and he is going to be out for a few weeks," Alonso said in his pre-match press conference. "Let's see how many. We don't want to predict that, but he's not ready for the next games." The manager indicated that Pedro is unlikely to return until after the international break in November, a significant absence for Chelsea's attacking setup.
Pedro had made an impressive start to the 2026–27 season, scoring five goals and providing three assists across seven competitive appearances. His absence forced Alonso to deploy Geovany Quenda in his Premier League debut against Tottenham and opened opportunities for attacking reinforcements. Alonso confirmed that Emmanuel Emegha, a summer signing from Strasbourg, was available for selection after recovering from a hamstring injury. The 23-year-old had not yet featured in a competitive match for Chelsea since his arrival.
Chelsea faced additional injury setbacks: goalkeeper Emi Martinez underwent jaw surgery after a collision in the Everton match and was replaced by Mike Penders, who made his Premier League debut against Tottenham. Cole Palmer was also unavailable due to suspension for the Liverpool fixture. Despite the disruptions, Alonso maintained confidence in his squad's depth. "We have to be ready to deal with the injury, be competitive and try to win games with the players we have available," he stated.

Why This Matters
Chelsea loses a leading attacking threat during a critical fixture sequence: João Pedro's absence removes five goals from the squad's output in the Premier League and cup competition over the coming weeks, forcing manager Alonso to deploy untested or recovering alternatives (Quenda, Emegha) and absorb concurrent injuries to goalkeeper Emi Martinez. The international break window in November defines his earliest return date; squad depth and match fitness become measurable pressure points through matchday performance.
