Russia intensifies offensive in Kostiantynivka as fighting enters critical phase

Russian forces are pressing their attack in Kostiantynivka, a strategic gateway to other parts of Ukraine's Donbas region, as part of their broader effort to seize the entire Donbas—a key Kremlin objective in the war. Ukrainian military officials acknowledge that approximately 130 Russian soldiers remain within the city, though they maintain that the situation remains under control. However, accounts from Ukrainian troops on the ground paint a more complex picture, with some describing the city as having become a "gray zone" no longer fully under anyone's control.

Russia's tactical approach mirrors strategies used in previous operations, with forces advancing from two directions to encircle the city and sever supply lines. Ukrainian sources indicate that Russian drone operators have shifted focus from targeting infantry to prioritizing Ukrainian drone pilots and launch positions, providing cover for Russian ground units to advance. The slow pace of Russian progress—sometimes measuring only 100 meters per day—reflects the intense urban combat conditions. However, Ukrainian drone operators report being stretched thin, with insufficient personnel and resources to simultaneously hunt enemy pilots while defending positions, allowing Russian forces greater operational freedom.

The strategic importance of Kostiantynivka lies in its position as a gateway to Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, described as Ukraine's last major strongholds in the eastern region. If the city falls, Russian forces would significantly advance their goal of complete Donbas control. Ukrainian intelligence assessments suggest the city's capture may be imminent, with analysts warning that loss of Kostiantynivka would make logistics in the region far more complex and even maintaining positions in Kramatorsk "extremely dangerous."

Ukrainian forces face mounting challenges, including insufficient reinforcements to replace losses and hesitation by commanders to report territorial losses, which could trigger orders to retake positions they lack manpower to defend. Supply delivery has become extremely difficult due to constant targeting of land routes and frequent interception of large logistics drones. Meanwhile, Russian drone units have grown increasingly effective, using inexpensive Chinese drones for reconnaissance now that they operate close enough to Ukrainian positions to avoid requiring advanced systems.

Ukrainian military personnel on the ground acknowledge that the tactical situation requires fundamental change. One drone operator warned that unless Ukraine shifts tactics to target Russian logistics and focus on eliminating Russian pilots rather than defending fixed positions, the Russian offensive will continue. The lack of strategic balance in resources and personnel has created what Ukrainian forces describe as a "serious crisis" in Kostiantynivka.
