Paul Mackenzie, leader of the Good News International Church, was sentenced to 200 years in prison on Friday by Kenya's High Court in Mombasa for the murders of 191 people—190 children and one adult. The sentence comprised 100 years for murder by starvation and 100 years for direct homicide, with the two principal sentences running consecutively. Justice Diana Kavedza delivered the judgment after finding Mackenzie and 28 co-accused guilty on October 19 of orchestrating a systematic killing scheme between January 2021 and September 2023.
Mackenzie, a former taxi driver who established his church in 2003, led followers to believe he was "Jesus's mouthpiece" and convinced them that starvation was the path to salvation and a way to "meet Jesus" before the world ended. Court testimony revealed that 183 victims died from complete lack of food, while eight others were killed through direct violence including strangulation and head injuries. His accomplices—including guards and gravediggers—enforced the fasting orders through threats and beatings. The judge noted the killings were "cold and calculated" and found no evidence of remorse among the perpetrators.
Mackenzie was arrested in April 2023 following a tip-off, and authorities subsequently uncovered over 400 bodies in shallow graves on an 800-acre property known as Chakama Ranch in Kilifi County's Shakahola Forest. More than 60 bodies were identified and reburied; many others remain unidentified. The scale of the tragedy drew international attention and prompted investigations that exposed systemic failures: local administration and law enforcement had repeatedly ignored warnings, despite Mackenzie being previously arrested in 2017 and 2019 but released due to insufficient evidence.
The court rejected Mackenzie's defense that he did not force followers to starve. Justice Kavedza found evidence of an organized system involving religious teachings that compelled members to fast, with those who resisted beaten to death. Burials in the forest were labeled "weddings" and the deceased celebrated as having "wedded with Jesus." Some children were isolated and denied food while parents watched. Post-mortem results and witness testimony corroborated the starvation narrative.
Prosecutors had sought the death penalty for Mackenzie, but the judge decided keeping him alive would enable recovery of missing remains and allow families to learn the fate of their relatives. Mackenzie is also facing separate charges of terrorism, manslaughter, child abuse, and torture related to over 200 additional deaths; he has denied these charges. His defense lawyer announced an immediate appeal, arguing the sentence amounts to a de facto life term that circumvents constitutional limits. Kenya's last execution was in 1987; those sentenced to death serve life sentences instead.
Why This Matters
A court in Kenya has imposed a 200-year sentence on a religious leader convicted of organizing the deaths of 191 people, including 190 children, through systematic starvation between 2021 and 2023. Over 400 bodies were recovered from shallow graves on an 800-acre property in Kilifi County. The case highlights documented gaps in law enforcement response—Mackenzie had been arrested twice before (2017, 2019) but released due to insufficient evidence. Families of victims remain searching for approximately 340 unidentified bodies, and Mackenzie faces additional charges related to over 200 further deaths. His defense team has announced an immediate appeal, claiming the consecutive sentence constitutes a de facto life term that violates constitutional limits; Kenya has not carried out executions since 1987, with death sentences typically commuted to life imprisonment.
