Tropical Storm Arthur, the first named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, brought strong winds and heavy rainfall to the U.S. Gulf Coast in mid-June. The system was designated a tropical storm by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) on June 17, with maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour (65 kilometers per hour) and tropical-storm-force winds extending 175 miles (280 kilometers) from its center. At Galveston, Texas, a gust of 48 miles per hour was recorded.
NASA’s Terra satellite captured natural-color and infrared images of the storm on June 17 at 10:30 a.m. Central Time.
