Apple announced a redesigned iPad mini on October 26, 2026, featuring an 8.5-inch OLED Super Retina XDR display, the A20 Pro chip, and IP67 water and dust resistance. The device launches November 6, with pre-orders beginning October 28. The Wi-Fi model starts at $699, while the Wi-Fi + Cellular variant begins at $849—each $100 more than the previous generation.
The new iPad mini is 15 percent thinner and lighter than its predecessor, measuring 5.4 mm thick with 24 percent narrower bezels. The OLED display delivers peak brightness of 1,200 nits for HDR content and 600 nits for standard content, along with a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio and P3 wide color gamut support. An optional nano-texture coating reduces glare and costs an additional $100 for 256GB and 512GB models only.
The A20 Pro chip—built on TSMC's 2-nanometer process—offers up to 60 percent faster CPU performance and up to 4.5 times faster AI performance compared to the previous A17 Pro. The 128GB and 256GB models feature a 5-core CPU, 7-core GPU, and single 16-core Neural Engine, while the 512GB configuration includes a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU, and dual 16-core Neural Engine. The device supports iPadOS 27 with Apple Intelligence and Siri AI capabilities.
The iPad mini introduces an Acoustic Display system that eliminates traditional speaker holes, with specially designed woofers integrated into the display for deeper bass and custom tweeters positioned between the glass and aluminum enclosure for clearer highs. This design also enables the IP67 rating—the first for iPad mini. The device includes a 12-megapixel center-frame front camera positioned on the long edge for landscape video calls, a 12-megapixel rear wide camera with adaptive True Tone flash, Apple's N1 wireless chip supporting Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, and the C2 cellular modem for up to 50 percent faster mobile data speeds. Fast charging support allows 50 percent charge in 30 minutes with a 35W-or-higher power adapter.
Storage configurations include 128GB at $699 (Wi-Fi) or $849 (Cellular), 256GB at $799 or $949, and 512GB at $999 or $1,149. The device is available in Midnight and Starlight colors. In Japan, pricing begins at ¥119,800 for the 128GB Wi-Fi model, with Nano-texture glass adding ¥17,000 and cellular adding ¥25,000. Education pricing in the US starts at $649.
Why This Matters
Apple's new iPad mini with OLED display, A20 Pro chip, and IP67 rating impacts tablet buyers seeking premium portable computing with enhanced display quality, AI capabilities, and water resistance. Starting at $699 (Wi-Fi) and $849 (Cellular), with pre-orders October 28 and availability November 6, the product targets consumers in competitive markets where display technology, processing power, and durability influence purchase decisions. The 60% faster CPU and 4.5× faster AI performance relative to the previous A17 Pro may affect developer platform choices and app optimization priorities.
