Real Madrid secured a 2-1 victory over Barcelona at Spotify Camp Nou on 25 October 2026, with Kylian Mbappe scoring twice, including a decisive 87th-minute winner. The result halted Barcelona's winning streak and brought Real Madrid to within three points of the league leaders. Barcelona had aimed to set a record for consecutive victories at the start of a Spanish top-flight season, but the defeat ended their run at nine consecutive wins—matching the previous record set by Real Madrid in 1968–69.
Mbappe's first goal came in the 41st minute through an unusual deflection: Gerard Martin's attempted clearance of Yan Diomande's low cross deflected off the France striker into the net. The match remained tight until Barcelona equalised in the 61st minute when Raphinha finished from Pedri's pass, shooting through Jude Bellingham's legs. Real Madrid then seized the initiative late in the match when Bellingham's skill on the ball released Eduardo Camavinga, whose cutback allowed Mbappe to finish into an unguarded net.
Real Madrid achieved the victory without suspended forward Vinicius Jr and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who was ruled out due to illness. Substitute goalkeeper Andriy Lunin made several crucial saves, including an exceptional one-handed stop from Gerard Martin's header in the 66th minute. Mbappe, who has now scored eight goals in seven El Clasico appearances since joining Real from Paris St-Germain in summer 2024, added to his tally to reach 11 league goals for the season—second only to Barcelona's Raphinha, who has 13.
Post-match, Real Madrid manager José Mourinho praised his team's performance, describing the match as high-level football between two sides that played to win. However, Mourinho also criticised the match officials, particularly regarding an incident in the 57th minute when Barcelona defender Joao Cancelo put his studs into Diomande's calf without receiving a red card. Mourinho stated that "the VAR was sleeping" and suggested the red card "would have changed the match." Barcelona's loss came after a 4-2 defeat to Paris St-Germain earlier in the week.
Following ten matches, Barcelona remain league leaders with 27 points, Atletico Madrid are second with 25 points, and Real Madrid have moved into third place with 24 points.

Why This Matters
Real Madrid's victory closes the Spanish La Liga title race: Barcelona remains atop with 27 points, but Real Madrid (24 points) and Atlético Madrid (25 points) are now within striking distance. The result halts Barcelona's bid to set a Spanish top-flight record for consecutive wins at season start (they reached nine, matching Real Madrid's 1968–69 record). Mbappe's performance—8 goals in 7 El Clasico matches since summer 2024 signing—signals Real Madrid's attacking depth amid absences of Vinicius Jr and Courtois. Controversy over Cancelo's unpunished challenge may influence officiating scrutiny in upcoming fixtures.
