Dark Souls 2 Seamless Co-op Mod Nears Alpha Testing, Creator Calls It One of Their Most Complex Projects

Modder Yui has provided a major update on their seamless co-op mod for Dark Souls 2, saying it is nearly ready for alpha testing. They described the project as one of their most complex due to the game's unique engine, and acknowledged that the initial announcement in April 2025 was premature. The mod will support up to six players but only in the Scholar of the First Sin edition.

Modder Yui has announced that their seamless co-op mod for Dark Souls 2 is "close" to being ready for alpha testing, describing the project as one of their "most complicated and ambitious projects to date." The update, shared via a YouTube video and blog post, marks significant progress since the mod's initial announcement in April 2025.
Yui admitted that the original announcement was made "a bit prematurely" and that they "probably should have held off until I made more progress." Despite having created similar seamless co-op mods for Elden Ring, Nightreign, and the original Dark Souls, Yui explained that Dark Souls 2 presented unique challenges due to its underlying game engine.
"Dark Souls 2 is a bit of an outcast in terms of modding and reverse engineering," Yui stated. "Dark Souls 1, 3, Sekiro, Elden Ring, and Nightreign all run on a very similar game engine... Dark Souls 2, from what I understand, is a separate branch of the game engine used in Dark Souls 1, with significant modifications. For reverse engineering purposes it's basically a completely different game."
Once ready for testing, the mod will support up to six players in co-op gameplay for Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin edition. It will not be compatible with the original Dark Souls 2, as that version is 32-bit while Scholar of the First Sin is 64-bit — mirroring the approach Yui took with their Dark Souls 1 seamless co-op mod, which only works with the remastered version.

Why This Matters
For Dark Souls 2 players and modding enthusiasts, this update signals that a highly anticipated seamless co-op experience is finally within reach. Once released, it will allow up to six players to explore Drangleic together without typical session constraints, fundamentally changing how the game is experienced. The mod's free alpha testing phase lowers the barrier to entry, though early bug reporting access is gated behind Patreon support. This advancement also highlights the complexities of modding older, divergent game engines—a key insight for the modding community.
