Police bodycam footage released showing Luigi Mangione's arrest in Pennsylvania

Police body camera footage from Luigi Mangione's arrest was unsealed and publicly released on October 2, 2026, following a petition by news outlets including CNN. The videos document Mangione's December 9, 2024, apprehension at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania, five days after UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot in Manhattan.

The footage shows officers approaching Mangione, who was wearing a ski hat, surgical face mask, and winter coat at the restaurant. When asked to lower his mask, officers immediately recognized him. One officer stated on camera, "That's 100% him." Mangione initially provided police with a fake New Jersey driver's license bearing the name "Mark Rosario"—the same name prosecutors say was used to check into a New York City hostel before Thompson's killing. After questioning, Mangione provided his real name, telling officers, "I clearly shouldn't have" lied about his identity.

During searches at both the McDonald's and the Altoona Police Department, officers recovered a 9-millimeter handgun, a silencer, ammunition magazines, and a journal with handwritten notes. Authorities later confirmed the recovered gun was the murder weapon used in Thompson's death. Officers also found a Faraday bag containing Mangione's cellphone and documented a checklist and references to planned activities in his possession.

The videos were originally shown during a December 2024 suppression hearing, where Mangione's defense attorneys argued the evidence should be excluded. Judge Gregory Carro ruled most evidence admissible and sealed the recordings until news organizations petitioned for their release following Mangione's August 2025 guilty plea to federal stalking charges. In his federal court statement, Mangione admitted to shooting Thompson on Manhattan's streets and stated he had used a 3-D printer to manufacture part of the firearm.

Mangione faces sentencing in the federal case on December 18, 2025. His state murder trial, which was previously scheduled to begin in September 2025, has been postponed as his attorneys filed a motion to dismiss the state indictment on double jeopardy grounds, arguing that prosecution on both federal and state charges for the same conduct would violate constitutional protections.
