Xabi Alonso praises Henderson's commitment as Chelsea midfielder integrates into squad

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has commended Jordan Henderson's work ethic and integration into the squad following the veteran midfielder's full debut against Brentford on October 5, 2026. Alonso highlighted Henderson's decision to forgo additional rest during the international break, instead choosing to train and accelerate his adaptation to Chelsea's tactical system. "He didn't want many days off," Alonso told media ahead of Chelsea's match against Bournemouth. "For him it was important to have the feeling of being back on the pitch after missing pre-season, missing the first games, and to feel how his arm was feeling and to have that confidence."

Despite lacking full match sharpness, Henderson completed 90 minutes against Brentford at full intensity, a milestone Alonso described as crucial for his Chelsea career. The manager emphasized that Henderson's stamina and ability to maintain the team's demanding tempo throughout the match demonstrated his readiness to contribute further as he becomes more familiar with the tactical requirements. Alonso stated: "It was important to unlock those first minutes on the pitch. That he was playing that tempo, that intensity for 90 minutes, it was good, and I think that now it will be getting better."

Beyond tactical considerations, Alonso stressed the importance of Henderson's character and personality within the squad. The manager praised the 35-year-old's strong presence and extensive league experience, noting that these qualities have already begun to resonate with teammates. "We need the right players in terms of quality, in terms of personality, and Hendo has great personality, great experience in the league. Now we have had more time with him, he can connect very well with the players," Alonso explained. Henderson joined Chelsea on a free transfer in the summer following 34 appearances for Brentford during the 2025-26 season, bringing hundreds of domestic matches and international experience to Stamford Bridge.
