France dominates 2026 Decanter World Wine Awards as emerging regions surge

The Decanter World Wine Awards have announced their 2026 results, revealing a dynamic global wine landscape where established powerhouses maintain supremacy while emerging regions achieve breakthrough performances. More than 17,000 wines from 58 countries were evaluated by 245 judges over a rigorous two-week process held in London, with France securing the strongest overall performance with 254 top-tier medals—the country's best results in the competition's 23-year history. Pierre Mansour, a judge and regional chair of the awards, described the current era as a golden age for wine drinkers, noting that the results demonstrate exceptional quality emerging from every corner of the world.

France's dominance was particularly evident in Burgundy, which recorded more Best in Show medals than any other wine region globally. Italy ranked second overall with 144 top-tier medals, including Best in Shows from Tuscany, Piedmont, Sicily and Lombardy. Spain secured its greatest-ever haul of top-tier medals, while Germany nearly doubled its previous tally and Austria achieved two Best in Show, eight Platinum and 15 Gold medals. The medal hierarchy ranges from Best in Show, representing the top 0.3% of wines tasted, down through Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze classifications.

The United States recorded its best-ever performance at the awards with two Best in Show medals, five Platinum and 32 Gold medals. The American Best in Show winners were Clos du Val's Yettalil from Stags Leap District, California 2023, and Domaine Serene's Aspect from Dundee Hills, Oregon 2023. While California, Oregon and Washington continued their dominance, Texas achieved a landmark breakthrough with its first-ever Gold medals, including four Texan wines from Hill Country: AB Astris Souzao 2022, Turtle Creek Tannat 2023, Adega Vinho Estate Tempranillo 2021, and Spicewood Vineyards Las Montañas 2022. Virginia won five Gold medals and Pennsylvania secured one, signaling expanding American wine excellence beyond traditional regions.

The United Kingdom achieved record-breaking results with 217 total medals, leading the world in magnum sparkling wine awards. Balfour's Blanc de Blancs from Kent 2018 won Best in Show, while Essex emerged as a rising star with five medals including Silver awards for Lyme Bay Winery's Pinot Noir and Bacchus, positioning the southern English county as a potential next major producer. Mansour predicted that Essex Pinot Noir represents the next significant development in global wine production. Argentina also recorded its greatest-ever haul with 61 top-tier medals, marking record-breaking performance across South America.

The 2026 results underscore a fundamental shift in the global wine landscape. According to Mansour, the US wine industry—already the fastest-growing wine market in the world—has substantial opportunity ahead despite being relatively new to premium production. The emergence of regions like Texas and Essex, alongside continued expansion in South America, demonstrates that quality viticulture is no longer confined to traditional European heartlands, offering consumers unprecedented diversity in sourcing exceptional wines.
